Blind since Birth – Now an Independent Grocer

Gulu Khan Son of Kayam Khan, 45 years old is residing in village Alisaron ki Basti (Khudani), Gram Panchayat Ranasar of Sheo block in district Barmer. He belongs to Muslim community. He is totally blind by birth. His elder brother is mentally ill since 10 years therefore overall responsibility falls on Gulu Khan, who is still unmarried. When first time, Mahila Mandal Barmer Agor field worker met him during baseline survey under CES programmer, he was simply sitting at home doing nothing. Helping others was different thing, but he himself was depended on others.

CES staff met Gulu Khan regularly and trained him to do his daily living activities by himself and orientation & mobility without anyone’s help. He was trained in such a way that he could be able to bear the responsibility of his family. Community meetings were also conducted regularly in his village so that he could be accepted in the society and could get respectable place in the mainstream. The field worker had to face many problems to bring him in the mainstream of the society. People have negative thought towards the blind persons in the society that a blind person cannot do anything. They were not supporting to our worker but he did not leave the courage and kept the regular contact with them. Gulu Khan himself was interested to do something and want to prove that a blind person also can do all the things, which a normal person does.

Gulu Khan was trained to identify the currency and to run a grossery shop in the village. Now a day he is earning Rs.  50 - 70 per day. People, who were laughing and making jokes of Gulu Khan earlier, are respecting him and he is living a respectable life. He was brought to Barmer and medical certificate, bus pass, Rail pass etc. are issued to him.

At present he is very satisfied with his life and thanking to MMBA, Who has given him a respectful in the society.
